Unrequited Love on K-Drama “Our Beloved Summer”
“My life wasn’t a work of art. It was just an episode of a boring documentary series that no one watches.” — Kim Ji Ung
Some of us may think the same as Kim Ji Ung, that we are not the central figures in the story, the ones who control the major plot points. Having a constant sense of fear about all relationships, including those involving friendship and love. Why isn’t it possible for us to be the main character of our own story? despite the fact that it is obvious that we are the movie’s director, don’t you think?
Since returning to self-control requires adopting the perspective that we are the primary role, thus there isn’t actually a clear answer to this topic. But by interfering in other people’s lives, we frequently push ourselves past our personal limitations. This may be because our brains are overloaded with information, consequently we get exhausted when walking in our own pathways.
There is one aspect of Kim Ji Ung’s character that, among others, I believe stands out: how is it possible for someone to endure being unrequited love relationship for so long?
According to Zoltán Kövecses’s book, metaphors and emotions, burden and illness are among the source domains and emotions that people experience. Anger, fear, despair, and disappointment are all vividly described by the term “emotion” in this burden. As with illness, it frequently refers to feelings that are thought of as “negative” feelings. These feelings are understood to include grief, unrequited love, fear, and disappointment. Additionally, there is a connection between illness and burden.
Therefore, based on what I’ve noticed, Kim Ji Ung has a history of being passive about his feelings and was frequently abandoned by his mother. As a consequence, losing the person who was closest to him made it harder for Kim Ji Ung to express his emotions to himself.
The “burden & illness” Kim Ji Ung had in the past had not been resolved, and although meeting many women as he aged, Yeon-su remained someone he loved. As a result, when Kim Ji Ung became an adult, he naturally stated that He wouldn’t give up until the pain in his heart no longer matched the misery he was used to feel.
Due of the absence of a specific “Express” Emotion, Kim Ji Ung decided to remain with one-sided love. Like the straightforward expression “I love you,” which uses the word descriptive emotion of love to both describe and communicate the emotion.
What are your thoughts on this unrequited love, then?
